AOL Mail is the creation of the larger AOL company. AOL is one of the most recognized names on the web today. The company began as the Control Video Corporation, or CVC, that was founded by Bill von Meister. The corporation produced an online service called GameLine which was intended for the Atari 2600 gaming console. The company eventually expanded to include other consoles, such as the Commodore 64 and computers. AOL always featured online game services in its collection of products. The current AOL employs around 8,000 individuals and is based on Broadway in New York City.
The main draw to AOL Mail for some users is the branding. AOL has been an internet staple for decades now, and many users feel comfortable with the company. Beyond the name, the service offers many of the same features a user can expect from their email service. Of course the same features found in so many places aren’t necessarily a bad thing, since each functionality offers a convenience to the user.
The AOL Mail homepage maintains a very simple, stylish design that features a translucent text box inviting the user to subscribe to the AOL newsletter. A stylized man with an enormous red dot for a head, eyes and a pair of black Buddy Holly style glasses sits in a chair with the AOL name silhouetted in his forehead. The image is definitely unique, and borders on unsettling to a new visitor. The creepy images seem to be scattered throughout the application, with a kaleidoscope of green bugs on the registration page.
A new user can register for an AOL Mail account by clicking the blue “Sign Up for a Free Account” link found along the right hand side of the homepage (under the log in area). Clicking the box takes the user to the registration form which asks for a first and last name, desired email address and password. After clicking the blue and white “Next” button, the user is asked for their date of birth, gender, zip code, security question and answer and an optional alternative email address.
AOL Mail is available to all users for free. The visitor only has to register for an account and they can begin accessing their AOL Mail inbox. This is definitely a good choice considering how many free email options there are out there today. No premium paid membership is currently offered.
AOL Mail is ideal for anyone who is looking for a simple email solution. The application is intended for individuals who are looking for a personal email address. AOL Mail includes all the expected basic email features combined with a unique style.
